Preventing mailbox vandalism - May 27, 2009
Rural mailboxes are especially vulnerable to vandalism because they are isolated and because they are not usually visible to the homeowner. Their city counterparts are vulnerable too, but to a lesser degree. It is a crime to vandalise, injure, deface or destroy a mailbox as well as any mail contained within. But sometimes even threats of fines and imprisonment are not enough to stop the practice. The task unfortunately falls on the owner to protect against this danger.
Remove your mail as soon as possible after delivery, piled up mail just encourages theft and interference, or if you can’t, perhaps you should rent a post box from a postal service.
Place a sticker on your mailbox warning vandals that their actions are a crime and the penalties their actions may incur. Sometime this is sufficient. Keep your mailbox in a state of good repair and make sure that it has been installed correctly. This helps prevent anyone from just working it loose from its support while good locks or hinges are often enough to prevent anyone from opening it and stealing what is contained inside.
There are a host of different mailboxes available to suit almost any need. If vandalism is a real threat you may want to consider moving your mailbox to another location, or you may want to consider investing in a different type of mailbox such as one that fits into your door or through a front wall. If this is not possible, the least you can do is to make sure that they type of mailbox you choose is resistant to vandals and this relies on the type of material you choose and the type of locks you have fitted.
