Post office box - March 16, 2009

The post office boxes are lockable boxes which are designed to receive uniquely addressed mail.  They are usually only found within or on the premises of a post office.

Designed for ease of use these boxes are found in countries where door to door deliveries are not available.  Renting a post office box is then the only method in which people are able to receive their mail.  They are rented out to both individuals and companies by a post office.  The cost varies depending on the size of the box.  Those found in the central business district are more expensive than those found in rural areas.

In the United States fees are based on different groups, judged by location.  In the UK post office boxes are not as secure and consist of pigeon holes which can be found in a secure area within a sorting office, they are not accessible by individuals who must be issued with a card.  This card is handed to the postal work who retrieves and issues their mail.

The amount of post office boxes varies according to the post office itself.  Post offices in smaller areas often only offer 100 or less which post offices in larger areas can accommodate up to 100,000 boxes.

Numbering Schemes

In most USA cities the first two numbers of the post office box are tied intogether with the last two numbers of the zip codes which leave the remaining numbers in the middle those which identify the post office box itself.  In the UK, boxes are consequently numbered and each box is allocated a unique postcode which is appropriate to the town where the post office box is held.
