Business grabs the idea of the mailbox - May 7, 2009

With the introduction of letter boxes, way back in history, businesses began to recognise the benefits of owning their own, such as having more post delivered without needing to employ staff.   The other was security.

Businesses saw that the added security in the form of locks would restrict all but those who held the key from accessing their post and it didn’t take long thereafter for different departments to get their own mailboxes, ensuring a further cost saving because they too eliminated the need for mail sorting staff.  It is now a common sight to see banks of mailboxes erected in vertical or horizontal banks, built into the walls of business premises.

With the increasing demand by businesses for secure door to door postal deposits, mailboxes started becoming specialised.  An Anti Arson mailbox is one case in particular, protecting businesses from becoming targets arson.

Anti Arson mailboxes are available in two varieties.  The first one contains a built in fire extinguisher.  In the event of fire, this type of box only requires cleaning and replacement of extinguisher tubes

The second mailbox is fitted with a special intumescent lining, which expands, thus starving the fire of oxygen.  In the event of fire the entire mailbox would need to be replaced but the contents should be safe.

Mail boxes attached to chutes were then developed.  They could be fitted through walls ensuring complete tamper proofing.   Rear retrieval mailboxes soon found their way onto the market as they offered more versatility.  They could be freestanding or mounted on wall, fence or door making retrieval completely secure.
