Post Boxes in the UK: A Brief History - August 20, 2010
When someone mentions post boxes to you, especially if you’ve grown up in the UK, you’ll most likely think of the traditional red letter boxes, used for posting letters, which are such a familiar part of our landscape.
The first of this type of pillar post box was erected in Jersey in 1852, and the novelist Anthony Trollope, working for the Post Office at the time, was a driving force behind what started as a trial.
It was a whole century, however, before the standardised EIIR pillar box, which we know and love today, first appeared on UK streets in 1952.
There is however, another type of post box, which is more usually associated with properties in the USA: this is the residential or business “mail box”, which is either standalone, or attached to the fencing around a property. These post boxes are used by the postman to drop off your mail on their rounds, are now increasingly common in the UK and Europe.
This type of post box is, for many consumers, a viable and attractive alternative to the traditional front-door letter boxes, which can cause problems; they sometimes have a spring mechanism which could trouble the postman, especially in combination with an unfriendly dog.
Here at Mailbox Mania, a friendly family business, we offer a wide variety of alternatives to the traditional front-door letter box. Whatever your needs, from freestanding stainless steel post boxes, to wall-mounted letter boxes for an apartment block, we are here to help.
